A few months ago, someone I work with turned me on to Twitter. By now you know that this is the biggest things as far as social media sites are considered. I resisted joining Twitter for a long time. This is largely due to the inability to understand what the big deal was. I never quite understood Twitter but now my opinion is radically different.
Using Twitter starts with getting online and logging in every day. A friend turned me onto an application that allows me to leverage a number of different Twitter functions. By using these tools and having hands on experience, I’m finding that Twitter provides a number of valuable resources for my day to day activities.
With so many varied interests, its always been difficult for me to find like minded individuals who are in to so many of the same things that I am. Social media platforms like Twitter have solved this problem for me. Not only can you find others who share similar interests or vocations, but you can follow posts made around a given subject area or topic. This is a good indication of what’s being discussed across millions of users. Not only do you have access to individuals sharing the same interests you have, but also celebrities. I never really thought that I would care to have access to what one celeb or another was doing, but it definitely makes people seem more approachable. I’ve also sent and received Tweets from celebrities, making them seem more human.
When you find a group of individuals who share your interests, concerns, and are willing to have a discussion around them, it enriches your experience. This is especially true as I have built a small following of people within my area of interest. When I have a question or topic that needs discussion, this group is there to share what they know and comment on my messages, also called tweets. Also called retweeting, the act of sending someones post to your follower happens frequently within the Twitter community.
The greatest benefit of connecting with other with whom you chose is that you can filter the information and respond when the mood strikes. By using applications that allow you to prioritize Tweets or search for specific conversations, you can quickly see benefit in the information that’s being shared. Often times, individuals include links to valuable content and information that they have come across on the web. This is both useful and time consuming when related to a particular need you may have.
I was not an early adopter of social media and for good cause. I never saw the point of Tweeting or trying to build a fan base. However, now that I’ve gotten my feet wet and have a good deal more experience with Twitter, I see that it’s not only good for getting information but giving it as well. I often get asked about Twitter and its role in marketing. Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter seem to be interesting sites, but can they be used to build your brand or help you sell more? I believe they can as long as you keep these strategies in mind.
To be effective with your use of social media, you need to communicate in the area of your expertise. For example, if you are a designer interested in HTML you want to be communicating with other people who have an interest in web site development. By creating a following that you have something in common with, you’re sure to have a valuable dialog.
Begin with a Social Media plan. Many people start using social media without a clear objective. You should always begin with a clear objective and by developing a plan to support social media activities on a regular basis. Decide if you can handle the burden of social media on your own or if you will require help from others.
Share what you know. Each of us has an area or discipline that we know something about. If you have a hobby, career, or area of interest, then focus on sharing what you know with others. By focusing your efforts on what you know best, your passion comes through and keeps others engaged. This creates more value for your followers and keeps them coming back.
Communicate on a consistent basis. One of the most important aspects of social media is having a dialog on a regular basis. You must commit some time to posting on social media related sites a few times per week. By staying in front of others on a regular basis, you make sure that the conversation continues to grow. The more you put in the more you’ll get back. Communicate often and consistently to be successful.
Invite others to participate. By inviting others to participate in your subject matter, you can create meaningful conversation. Stop selling. Something that I see on a regular basis is direct selling happening on social media websites. However, what these individuals don’t realize is that nothing turns off individuals more than being sold. Rather, they want to learn about a subject area and choose products and services on their own after research, recommendations, and reasoning. Don’t use social media to sell directly. Rather, use social media to build a following. Once you have proved value, others will look to follow you and the products you use or try.
Using social media for marketing success is possible. However, to do so you will have to walk a fine line between offering value, communicating regularly, and mentioning products or services. Your best bet is to create a following first, create value, and only offer suggestions that are relevant to the dialog. Make a social media plan that can help you succeed online and follow through every day. Social media should be a significant part of your marketing plan.

Once you’ve gotten familiar with Twitter, its time to start building a following. Just you follow others, others may want to follow you. The best place to begin is by adding quality posts. What are you reading that may be of interest to others? What web sites are you visiting on a regular basis? Share those things that provide value to others and you will quickly create a large list of followers. Once you have a list, you can begin to utilize your list of followers much like you would a direct marketing house list.
Once you’ve established a list and provide a good deal of value through your thoughts and ideas that are shared on a regular basis, you can begin offering information on affiliate products or your own products and services. When you do this the right way others will learn more about these offers and even make a purchase. This is direct marketing at its best. One must be careful though as you don’t want to abuse your list.
